Eight Tornado wrestlers traveled to Cherryvale last week for the annual Tri-Valley League Tournament, where Lady Tornado senior Lyndsey Escareno was named champion in the 140-pound class. Lady Tornadoes Maela Neill, Makyla Gore, Harlie Owings and Kadin Deshane placed second. Tornadoes Paiton Gravatt and Trayton Carl Biering placed third and Ethan Bauer placed fourth.
This Saturday, Feb. 10, members of the Eureka Lady Tornado and West Elk Lady Patriot wrestling teams will travel to Columbus for the 4-1A Regional Tournament. The top four in each weight class will advance to the 4-1A State Tournament, in Salina on Feb. 22-24.
Several area wrestlers traveled to Mulvane over the weekend for the Battle of the Belt tournament.
Three Lady Tornadoes claimed hardware at the two-day Circle Tournament last Friday and Saturday. Lady Tornado seniors Lyndsey Escareno and Makyla Gore claimed second place and sophomore Harlie Owings placed third.
In a Tri-Valley League (TVL) game, the Eureka Lady Tornadoes hosted the Humboldt Cubs on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Putting on a defensive clinic, Eureka held Humboldt to only four points in the first quarter and two in the fourth quarter. The Tornadoes dominated in the 78-31 victory.
Five Patriots claimed hardware at the annual Fredonia Invitational, on Saturday, Jan. 27. Patriot junior Creyo Koop claimed first at the tournament and also earned his fourth “Wrestlers of the Tournament” honor. Seniors Evan Coble and Kayla Wright placed second and senior Nolan Morris and ??? Marisa Ghramm placed fourth at the tournament.
Two Eureka Tornado boys wrestlers placed at the 2024 Titan JV Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 27, at Wichita South.
The Eureka High School boys played the Caney Valley Bullpups Tuesday night at home. They lost the game to the hot-shooting visitors 31-64.
In the second Tri-Valley League match-up of the season, the Eureka Lady Tornadoes faced the Fredonia Yellowjackets at home on Jan. 26. Laynie Winfrey and Brenna Rucker put on quite the show, both scoring 20 plus points and making themselves unstoppable from behind the arc and within the paint. The 58-39 win over the Yellowjackets delivered the Lady Tornadoes their 8th win of the season, making them 8-4.
