West Elk Girls Basketball Secured #3 Seed In Cherokee-Southeast Sub-State

The Lady Patriots got off to a slow start offensively last Tuesday, Feb. 20 on the road, where they faced Central.

The Lady Patriots got off to a slow start offensively last Tuesday, Feb. 20 on the road, where they faced Central.

West Elk came out of the gate with a solid defense, which aided them through their low scoring first quarter. Central held what would be their only lead of the game after the first period, West Elk trailing 3-5. The Patriots gained momentum in the second quarter, knocking down 12 points to claim the lead. West Elk went to halftime with a 15-9 advantage. They carried this momentum into the second half, where the Patriots tallied 20 points, eight of those from Senior Makaila Gillespie. West Elk went to the final quarter, 35-18. At the final buzzer, the Patriots claimed a 52-32 win over Central and secured the 3rd Seed for 2-A Sub-State.

Scoring for West Elk were: Gillespie 16, Jaicey Tillapaugh 13, Josey Toon and Milly Koop with 6 points each, Kylie Beougher 5 and Nevaeh Tillapaugh with 4 points.

The Lady Patriots (#3, 10-10) were slated to kick-off sub-state Monday, Feb. 26 against Arma- Northeast (#6, 7-13). The winner will advance to the semifinal game on Thursday, Feb. 29, at Cherokee-Southeast, TBD. The championship game will be held at 5 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. March 2.
