Greenwood County residents received an early morning wake-up call last Tuesday, April 16, as severe weather impacted the area. Alerts to take shelter were sent through Greenwood County Alerts, Weather Radios and other app notification systems around 4:15 a.m., notifying residents in the Eureka area to seek shelter as they were in a tornado watch. According to the National Weather Service, two tornado tracks were found across Greenwood County from storms last week. The strongest tornado was an EF-2 that occurred south of Virgil around 7:30 a.m., which went unreported until Greenwood County Road and Bridge checked the area later in the morning. Warning systems did not go out as radar didn’t show that severe weather was occurring. However, after the damage was found, three witnesses stated they saw the tornado come through. The EF-2 traveled 2.7 miles and had a max width of 116 yards. The storm began at 7:34 and ended at 7:42 a.m.

The City of Eureka hosted an informative meeting, April 16, at Memorial Hall regarding the application for the Home Rehabilitation Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Representatives Megan Unruh and Mike Schwartz with South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD) were available to answer questions and provide program details for the 40 plus community members in attendance.

The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating circumstances behind an incident that resulted in the death of a 66-year-old Derby man.

With a jury trial about a month away, the Greenwood County District Court held a motion to sever hearing for the William Dee Wallace felony case, on Monday of this week to discuss various items, including the defendant’s wish to sever the three additional charges that were added in an amended complaint on March 21.

The 12th Annual Flint Hills Classic Livestock Show will be held in Eureka at the Greenwood County Fairgrounds on Sunday, April 28. This event is hosted by the Eureka FFA Booster Club. Over 400 hogs, goats, sheep and beef are shown at the Classic by FFA and 4-H members from all over Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Missouri. There will be three show arenas for the Classic.

A fundraiser is being planned for the family of Donna Kirkpatrick. The Eureka Pizza Hut fundraiser, scheduled for next Tuesday, April 30, is being held to assist the family with funeral expenses following Kirkpat-rick’s recent passing.

Highway 99 was closed for three hours during the early morning hours of Saturday, April 20, after two separate semis collided with cattle in the roadway, approximately two and a half miles south of Madison.
