The April 1 Howard City Council meeting was called to order by Mayor Richard Clark at 7:30 p.m., with council members Martin Hunter, Shilo Crupper, Derek Cookson, Jerrad Pope and Gary Harrod present. Also present was Howard Housing Authority (HHA) board members John Black, Debbie Roebuck, Patty Wiseman, Rodney Indermill, Susan Galvan Board Chair, Sherry Swendson State Certified Executive Director Specialist and Joanna Hunter City Clerk.

Valley Center senior Julianna Schultz signed a letter of intent last Wednesday, April 17 to play softball for the Moundbuilders of Southwestern College, in Winfield.

Varsity golf traveled to Fredonia on Tuesday, April 16, where the Tornadoes claimed third place as a team with a combined score of 393.

Tornado softball picked up two more victories last week as they defeated Central of Burden last Thursday.

On Saturday, April 13, members of the Eureka Recreation Commission track and field team competed at the Madison Recreation track and field meet for third-sixth grade participants.

Several members of the Eureka Tornado track and field team claimed hardware last Thursday, April 18, at the Fredonia Invitational. Eureka claimed five first place finishes, four second place finishes and one third place finish.

Eureka track and field traveled to Iola on Tuesday, April 16 for the Waverly Invitational: Following are the results for Eureka participants: GIRLS 100 Meter Dash: Olivia Valentine, 7th, 13.53; Maela Neill, 23rd, 14.69; Alicia Sanchez, 24th, 14.70. 200 Meter Dash: O. Valentine, 6th, 29.33; Neill, 24th, 31.04; Sanchez, 33.97. 400 Meter Dash: Brenna Rucker, 10th, 1:09.89. 800 Meter Run: Rose Buck, 1st, 2:31.83; Britta Mongeau, 10th, 2:57.73. 1600 Meter Run: Buck, 1st, 5:58.22; Mongeau, 5th, 6:21.46.

Last Friday, Governor Laura Kelly vetoed House Bill 2532, the horse race wagering bill. The bill passed 34-3 in the Senate and 8832 in the House. It was shared with The Eureka Herald that the bill was rejected due to language in the bill needing to be updated to include funding being granted to the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission for security and regulations. Bill writers have 10-days to update the language and return the bill to Governor Kelly for signature.

On Monday, April 22, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) planned to begin a resurfacing project on U.S. 400 in Greenwood County. The 16.3-mile project starts at the Butler- Greenwood County line and continues east to the east K-99 junction. Project activity includes surface recycling with an overlay. Flaggers and a pilot car will direct one-lane traffic through the work zone. Expect delays of 15 minutes or less during weekday daylight hours until July.
