The West Elk Patriots traveled to Sedan last Tuesday, Jan. 30 where both teams walked away with wins.
This Saturday, Feb. 10, members of the Eureka Lady Tornado and West Elk Lady Patriot wrestling teams will travel to Columbus for the 4-1A Regional Tournament. The top four in each weight class will advance to the 4-1A State Tournament, in Salina on Feb. 22-24.
Eight Tornado wrestlers traveled to Cherryvale last week for the annual Tri-Valley League Tournament, where Lady Tornado senior Lyndsey Escareno was named champion in the 140-pound class. Lady Tornadoes Maela Neill, Makyla Gore, Harlie Owings and Kadin Deshane placed second. Tornadoes Paiton Gravatt and Trayton Carl Biering placed third and Ethan Bauer placed fourth.
The Eureka High School boys basketball team played the Humboldt Cubs Tuesday night at home. They lost the game to the hot-shooting and state-ranked visitors 22-56. Once again, the Tornadoes could not find the basket consistently, hitting only three field goals on 24 attempts in the first half, and quickly fell behind.
In a Tri-Valley League (TVL) game, the Eureka Lady Tornadoes hosted the Humboldt Cubs on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Putting on a defensive clinic, Eureka held Humboldt to only four points in the first quarter and two in the fourth quarter. The Tornadoes dominated in the 78-31 victory.
The West Elk Patriot basketball teams hosted Oxford last Friday, Feb. 2, where the Lady Patriots were victorious for the night.
Three Lady Tornadoes claimed hardware at the two-day Circle Tournament last Friday and Saturday. Lady Tornado seniors Lyndsey Escareno and Makyla Gore claimed second place and sophomore Harlie Owings placed third.
Nine Eureka area youth qualified for the District Knights Of Columbus Free Throw contest, held in Andover, last Sunday, Feb. 4, and five of them qualified for the South Central Regional contest on Sunday, Feb. 18 The top free throw shooter in each age division qualified for the Kansas South Central Regional Free Throw contest at Garden Plain High School on Sunday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. Qualifying for the contest were pictured from left to right, Maggie Miller (10), Amorette Guillaume (13), Jersey Cox (14), Molly Dehlinger (11) and Tucker Damron (10).
Several area wrestlers traveled to Mulvane over the weekend for the Battle of the Belt tournament.
