Addiction is difficult to quantify, but user data can indicate how significant a problem addiction may be. According to data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration 2020 National Survey of Drug Use and Health, more than 14 percent of Americans age 12 and older have used cocaine in their lifetime and roughly 10 percent have used LSD.

During the monthly Eureka Recreation Commission (ERC) meeting last Wednesday, Aug. 29, ERC members asked Director Derek Larcom to gather bids to move the fence at City Park from 235-245 feet to 200 feet. Director Larcom brought the issue to the ERC as erosion behind the fence is taking place. The ERC discussed ways to prevent the erosion, however, getting equipment to the area could be problematic. After visiting the field, the ERC approved gathering bids as moving the fence to 200 feet would benefit area youth as well as eliminating the need for a snow fence to be placed during the Lady Tornado softball season. The ERC plans to meet with the city and Eureka USD 389 once they have additional details on costs before moving forward. A brief discussion was held regarding moving the adult league for next year to Lion’s Diamond and utilizing snow fence; however, no decisions were made. The current adult wood bat league will continue at City Park. Teams had this past weekend off due to the Labor Day holiday but will resume on Sunday, Sept. 8. The seven-team league plays one – one-hour game on Sundays through Oct. 13. A tournament will be held on Oct. 20. Games begin at 2 p.m.

Information was presented to Eureka City Council members on Monday, Aug. 27 in regards to a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) being pursued for intended use at Memorial Hall. City Administrator Joel Laws drafted a memorandum in addition to presenting the information to members of the council. Up to $600,000 can be applied for through this match grant, which stipulates 25% be matched by the applicant. The initial project scope included completion of windows at Memorial Hall and improving building efficiency. An agreement has been established with South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD) for provision of administrative services. In 2022, BG Consultants was hired to draft a Historic Structure Report and Physical Condition Assessment. To proceed, Laws told council members that Radon Testing for the amount of $1,600 and an updated Preliminary Architecture Report (PAR) for the amount of $4,750, quoted by BG Consultants, would need completed. If funds were received, the city’s match would be $150,000.

Facility updates have been ongoing at Greenwood County Hospital (GWCH), but within recent weeks the Rehabilitation department concluded its expansion. With expanding the department to include the former recovery room, the department was able to grow in space and equipment needs. Additional equipment items are planned to be added to the new space later this week. The Eureka Saddle Club (ESC) held their third Shodeo of the season on Saturday, Aug. 24.

A familiar face has returned to lead Worship Services at the Severy United Methodist Church. Pastor Susan Galvan will once again be serving the Severy Community effective Sept. 1.

Area sports teams will kick-off their 2024-25 season this week.

Five entities from Eureka received a comprised total of $47,500 in grant funds on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from the Tim Underwood Memorial. All five groups submitted grant applications noting their reasonings for seeking the funds, with all benefiting the community in some way.
