One Critically Injured In Three-Vehicle Accident At 99/400 North Junction

A three-vehicle accident left one in critical condition after being ejected from a vehicle last Tuesday, Dec. 10, at approximately 6:20 p.m. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), Christoper Dunaway, 44, of West Baldwin, Maine had stopped his 2002 GMC Savana at the north junction of K99 and U400 facing south when he attempted to turn east on U400 and was struck in the driver’s side by a 1998 Kenworth Semi. The semi continued through the intersection, crossed the center line and left the road before coming to a rest in the south ditch. The third vehicle, a 2019 Ford F250, was traveling eastbound on U400 and also struck the driver’s side of the Savana before coming to a rest.

Dunaway was ejected from the vehicle and was lifeflighted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where he was treated for his injuries. Roberto G. Barrera, 63, of Toronto was a passenger of Dunaway’s and was taken to Greenwood County Hospital (GWCH), where he was treated for suspected minor injuries.

Danny M. Jackman, 72, of Moran was the driver of the semi and was also taken to GWCH for suspected minor injuries.

The driver of the third vehicle was Enrique Fernandez, 73 of Rogers, Ark. He and one of his passengers, Daniel Fernandez, 5, didn’t have any apparent injuries. Two other passengers Juana Fernandez, 72, and Araseli Fernandez, 32, were taken by Greenwood County EMS to GWCH for suspected minor injuries.

The highway was restricted to one lane for several hours with crews remaining on scene until approximately 12 a.m.

KHP, Greenwood County Sheriff’s Deputies and Greenwood County EMS responded to the scene.
