The month of August has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in August 1924.
TOPEKA - The 90th Annual Kansas High School Activity Association (KSHSAA) Coaching School is headed to Salina. Over 500 participants are expected at Salina Fieldhouse, Aug. 5 and 6.
TOPEKA – Governor Laura Kelly signed a proclamation yesterday honoring the 50th anniversary of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in Kansas. Since the WIC program was first introduced in 1974, it has helped Kansas families access healthy, nutritional foods to better support the development of their children.

Do we now live in the desert? I have never been to a desert, but I’ve heard about how it gets really hot during the day and cools way down at night. Makes me wonder if we have moved to a desert.
After receiving multiple complaints from parents/guardians, the Eureka Recreation Commission (ERC) approved the adoption of United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) rules for the 2025 recreational season for baseball and softball. The decision came during their routine monthly meeting, which was held on Wednesday, July 31 at the ERC garage.
The Top Hand Youth Rodeo Association (THYRA) held event number three over the weekend with a total of 80 contestants and 490 entries.
PRCA Rodeo action will once again be in Eureka next weekend, Friday, Aug. 16 and Saturday, Aug. 17. Gates will open at 6 p.m. both nights, with Mutton Bustin’ for ages 6 and under beginning at 7 p.m. Sign up will be on the south side of the concession stand and participation is limited to the first 20 riders. Rodeo performances will begin at 8 p.m. both nights.
