Local Girl Scouts are currently working on a community service project, which will help fill the shelves of the local food bank.
Four Tornado wrestlers traveled to El Dorado on Saturday, December 2, for the 1st Annual Wrestling Tournament, with freshman Mason Hughes placing third.
Road Superintendent John Schouten provided his weekly report to Greenwood County Commissioners on Monday, December 4. Downedtreeswerediscussed as an issue in multiple locations in the county. Commissioner Roy Ballard shared two locations where trees were needing addressed: Y50 Road and 230th Street. Schouten reported that crew members were working to remove a tree that went down on 255th Street between P and Q Roads. Truck 25 broke down and was in Emporia for repair. A quote for repairs was presented at $16,981.68. This unit is a 2017 Kenworth. Following review of the quote received, commissioners approved proceeding with repairs. Schouten reported that all road graders were running; the Kenworth was the only truck currently out of service. Commissioner Mac Obourn notified Schouten of an issue located at the south side of a road within the 4th District, in the Reece area. He described issues with water pooling as the result of a plugged drain. Legal Counsel Paul Dean told commissioners that he had been contacted by an individual who voiced that road conditions were poor north of Hamilton and Virgil.
Three Elk County Wrestlers (ECW) traveled to McPherson last Sunday for the 2023 Girls Mac Town Throwdown. Following are the individual match wins for ECW participants: 6U 37-42: Axl Ellsbury placed 3rd. She won an 11-6 decision over Roxanna Stephens (Abilene Kids Wrestling Club) and won a 13-8 decision over Laina Stringer (MAC Wrestling Club).
The Bulldogs of Madison dominated the Yates Center Wildcats during their season opener last Friday night. Both the Madison girls and boys basketball teams more than quadrupled Yates Center’s score last Friday night.
Going into the LadyCat Duals mixer with nine open weight classes made it difficult for the Lady Tornadoes in their season opener, at Burlington last Friday, December 1. The Lady Tornadoes went 0-5 in dual action and placed eighth at the annual event.
The Eureka Wrestling Club was represented at the 2023 Girls Mac Town Throwdown by three Lady Tornadoes. Following are the individual match wins for EWC participants: 8U 71-77: Elena McCoy placed 7th. She won by fall over Cailey Potter (Great Bend Wrestling) (Fall 2:24).
West Elk Patriot basketball opened their winter season last Friday in Oswego, with both the boys and girls teams coming way with victories.
The West Elk Patriot wrestling teams opened their winter season last Friday, December 1, at the Wildcat Duals in Burlington. Patriot junior Creyo Koop went 5-0 at the tournament and was named to the All-Tournament team. He also pinned the four opponents he faced, with a combined total of 1:05 for the second place finish with the most pins in the fastest time. He won by default against Iola. Taking top honors was Isaiah Lowe of Maize South who pinned all five of his opponents with a combined time of 4:46.
