Highway 99 was closed for three hours during the early morning hours of Saturday, April 20, after two separate semis collided with cattle in the roadway, approximately two and a half miles south of Madison.
According to the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 12:56 a.m., they received a report of a non-injury accident in the 3100 block of Kansas Highway 99. The caller indicated that a semi-truck had struck a cow and was currently sitting on the side of the highway with minimal damage.
Upon arrival, deputies learned that Justin Putt, 42, of Mississippi was traveling southbound in a 2019 Kenworth, when he struck a black cow and pulled to the side of the road. Steve Turner 45, of Topeka went by Putt, northbound, also in the 3100 block in a 2004 Volvo semi-truck. Turner then struck two additional black cows causing his truck to leave the west side of the highway. Turn-er was hauling a box trailer that came to rest blocking the entire roadway.
Greenwood County Deputies shut down the highway for approximately three hours, until the semi-truck and trailer could be removed.
