Royalty To Be Crowned After Friday Night Football Game
The West Elk Patriots will kick off the 2023 Fall Homecoming celebration with a bonfire in the south parking lot on Thursday, September 28, at 8 p.m. Community members are welcome to come and show their school spirit. On Friday, September 29, at 3 p.m., the homecoming parade will take place on Wabash in front of Family Market. The West Elk Booster Club will begin serving its annual Tailgate Supper at 5:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., the West Elk Patriot football team will host the Mustangs of Flinthills. Finally, the homecoming ceremony and coronation will take place at the conclusion of the football game. 09/26/2023 11:00 PM

Pamela Lou “Pam” (Huntington) Cowley of Eureka, died on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the Eureka Nursing Center in Eureka, at the age of 82. She was born on January 1, 1941, in Eureka, the daughter of Samuel Alfred and Phyllis Mae (Denchfield) Huntington. She was raised in Wichita and Eureka, graduating from Eureka High School with the Class of 1959. Following graduation, she moved to Emporia where she attended college at Emporia State Teacher’s College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education. It was there she met her future husband, John Cowley. Following graduation, they were married. To this union, two sons were born. The couple moved to Hiawatha for 3 years, then to Paola where she was a homemaker. In 1969, they moved to Eureka. In 1980 she went back to work and was the librarian at Mulberry Elementary, until she retired in the mid 2000s. 09/19/2023 11:00 PM

National Farm Safety Week kicked off on September 19. Agriculture is considered one of the most dangerous occupations in the nation, but safety measures can lower producer’s risk of having a serious accident. Farm safety is not only limited to understanding how to safely operate equipment or the dangers of grain bins and working with animals. It also includes understanding how your body handles extremes in temperatures, diseases that can be contracted from animals, and also being aware of mental exhaustion and other stress factors. 09/19/2023 11:00 PM

Two New Members Selected to Join County 4-H Ambassador Team
This past week, the Greenwood County 4-H Ambassador Team interviewed two applicants and selected both to join their team. The two new team members are Brooke Gaines, a member of the Madison Pacesetters 4-H Club, and Addison Westerman, a member of the Racing Wranglers 4-H Club. The current team is made up of Lyle Perrier and Hannah Perrier both members of the Racing Wranglers 4-H Club, and TJ Mills and Corinne Nelson both members of the Fancy Mustangs 4-H Club. “We are very excited about adding Brooke and Addison to the team and the high-quality group Greenwood County has to represent and promote our county’s 4-H,” stated Agriculture and Natural Re-sources Extension Agent Ben Sims. 09/19/2023 11:00 PM
