Starting school for the first time or simply returning to campus after another summer break can lead to mixed feelings. Kids may be excited to see their friends every day, but that comes at the price of the end of lazy summer days.
A ranch parent’s worst nightmare came true on Sunday, Aug. 11 in rural Fall River, when four-yearold Gracie Mast was kicked in the chest by a horse as she was waiting her turn to ride.
A man with Eureka ties will soon be traveling from California to New York to promote his newest film, as well as attend its premiere in Kansas City, Mo. Shaun Peterson, son of Bill and Cindy Peterson of Severy/ Climax, recently wrote and directed Lover of Men, a documentary featuring a dozen scholars who argue the personal relationships of former President Abraham Lincoln.
Eureka City Fire Chief Luke Westerman announced during a recent city council meeting that the department was once again a recipient of funding through the Tim Underwood Memorial. Westerman explained that live training opportunities don’t come by often, and shared intentions for constructing a training structure with those dollars.
This Wednesday, Aug. 21, Eureka USD 389 will host their annual open house. Students and their parents/guardians are encouraged to attend the event, allowing students to bring supplies and meet their teachers. During the monthly meeting of the Eureka USD 389 Board of Education, board members once again decided to serve a free meal to those attending. The open house cookout will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. on the east side of Eureka Junior/Senior High School (EJSHS) (circle drive). The EJSHS commons area will also be available for those who wish to eat indoors. The Marshall Elementary (ME) open house will be held from 6-7 p.m. The EJSHS open house will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
An incorrect name listing was inadvertently included in last week’s edition (dated Aug. 14). The last name of ‘Watts’ was listed in error in association with the Greenwood County Commission meeting article. The former Noxious Weed Director’s name should have read as follows: Jennifer West.
Included on the Monday, Aug. 12 Eureka City Council agenda was continued discussion of truck routes to limit heavy traffic on side streets.
Following the conclusion of regular meeting agenda items on Monday, Aug. 19, Greenwood County Commissioners adjourned to Election Canvass. Commissioners voted to accept the two Provisionals recommended for approval and rejected those recommended for rejection. Winners from this year’s primary election will appear on the November General Election ballot.
