Sign installation over the front entrance to the Eureka City Fire Station was completed on Monday, Feb. 5.
Eureka will be represented by two Lady Tornadoes at the 4-1A State Wrestling tournament as seniors Lyndsey Escareno and Makyla Gore were named Regional Champion and Regional Runner-Up, respectively, at the 4-1A Columbus Regional last Saturday, Feb. 10.
On Monday, Feb. 12 the Greenwood County Hospital (GWCH) received approval to proceed with acquisition of the CareArc building. GWCH CEO Sandra Dickerson was present Monday morning and shared projections with commissioners in regards to anticipated net income and expenses. Dickerson reported that the GWCH board of Trustees had met on Friday, Feb. 9 and agreed to purchase the building across the street, contingent on consent from commissioners. She explained that, in actuality, this has to be formally purchased by the county (utilizing hospital funds) and deeded to the hospital, as the hospital cannot own property.
West Elk senior Kayla Wright earned her spot at the 4-1A Girls State Wrestling tournament next week and will be the first Lady Patriot to compete at the state contest.
The Eureka Tornadoes boys wrestling team will host 3-1A Wrestling Regionals this Saturday, Feb. 17, with matches beginning at 9 a.m. A total of 24 teams will be competing at the contest, with the top four in each weight class advancing to the boys 3-1A State Wrestling Tournament, at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina next Thursday, Feb. 22-Saturday, Feb. 24.

On Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, we bid farewell to Terry Fankhauser, a beloved figure born in Eureka, on October 16, 1970, to Larry and Mary Clark Fankhauser. Terry’s journey began at Madison High School, where he graduated with the Class of 1989, later pursuing football at Ft. Scott Community College, and earning his undergraduate and Masters in Ruminant Nutrition at Kansas State University.
