Raised Funds During Christmas To Stock Local Food Pantry

The Eureka Area Girl Scout Troops tried something new this year, which they hope to continue as a tradition.

New this year, area girl scouts made Christmas ornaments and decorated a tree at Eureka Garden & Floral where they had a donation box and the customers donated any amount they wished in exchange for an ornament. Girl Scouts then used the funds raised to purchase food for the local food pantry.

This year, the Eureka Girl Scout Troops collected $220 and went shopping for the food to donate. Last Wednesday, the Girl Scouts met Ava Jones, who helps with the local food pantry at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, located 1710 E. River Street, to drop off the food. Jones also explained how the food pantry works for those in need in the community. The food pantry is open the first and second Monday each month from 12 to 2 p.m. The area girl scouts decided to wait until after the holidays to do their shopping as it was reported the food bank receives more donations during the holiday season than in the summer. For this reason, the girls thought now would be a better time to have food available for those needing extra help while the kids are out of school for the summer.
