Noble Francis Chaplin of the Midian Shrine Center in Wichita was recently awarded the Shriner of the Year award by Potentate Robert Bair. Illustrious Sir Bair regaled the audience with Chaplin’s accomplishments over his 20 years as a Shrine member, focusing on highlights from this year and Chaplin’s five-year term as Midian’s Ceremonial Director.
Students at West Elk High School are taking a “Road Trip” this week as they are showing their school spirit during winter homecoming week 2024.
The USD 386 Madison- Virgil Board of Education met Wednesday, Jan. 17, and newly elected board members Amy Hind, Justin Isch and Janette Luthi were sworn in, and immediately their terms started with a bang.

After 28 rounds and 251 words, Eureka USD 389 crowned eighth grader Sadie Seiter as the 2024 district champion, last Friday, Jan. 19. The district spelling bee went for twodays as 31 spellers embarked on the district bee last Thursday, Jan. 18, at 1:30 p.m. Spellers went eight rounds, but as the end-of-school bell was set to ring, the bee was postponed with seven spellers still vying for the top honor.
The Madison High School National Honor Society will be hosting a blood drive on Monday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
The American Legion Boys State of Kansas is accepting applications for its 2024 session. The event is set to be held Sunday, June 2, through Saturday, June 8, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This will be the program’s 32nd consecutive session at KSU and 86th overall.
Hospitals have an urgent need for blood donations, as demand continues to outpace blood supplies, according to the American Red Cross. The organization says fewer donors contributed to the blood supply over the summer in 2023, creating a national blood shortage. As of the fall of 2023, donors of all types were urgently needed, and there was an emergency need for platelet donors and type O blood.
