Hamilton City Library Takes Some Adventures
Hamilton City Library Takes Some Adventures

The Hamilton City Library (HCL) is having their youngest patrons take virtual adventures in Kansas this summer, during the Summer Learning Program. Storytime continues through July on every Friday at 11:30 a.m. Ten places in Kansas are being discussed in the eightweek timeframe. So far the group has “virtually” traveled to Topeka and Dodge City and Abilene/ Atchison to learn about Gage Park and the Zoo, a Kansas Historical Museum, the Capitol Building (Topeka), Boot Hill, Rodeos and Santa Fe Trail (Dodge City) and talked about “Trains, Planes, and Other Things” (Abilene and Atchison). Kevin Lawrence and his son, Evan, had a presentation for the kids with a model train (electric) that lit up, it blew smoke from the engine, and the engineer talked. What an adventure that was! K. Lawrence played some railroad songs and sang while he played the banjo and the harmonica. Lunch was carryout or picnic on the floor. When the kids were asked, “What was your favorite part of today?” they replied… “The Train!”

Discussion was also held regarding the “no walk” rule that is in place for major boys and ponytail leagues. After four balls, a coach came out to pitch giving the kids two pitches to advance to the base or take an out. The rule was implemented as batters were not swinging the bat in hopes of being walked. Spectators previously complained as the games were simply an hour and 15 minutes of kids walking the bases until the run rule was met and the teams switched. The ERC then implemented the “no walk” rule to help ensure that kids were swinging their bats. It was noted that this year, kids were hitting the ball.
