Operation Green Light For Veterans

The initiative, led by the National Association of Counties (NACo), raises awareness around the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.

Now in its third year, Operation Green Light is spearheaded by NACo and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, building upon successful efforts by the New York State Association of Counties and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association in 2021. In 2023, over 300 counties participated in Operation Green Light.

From November 4-11, buildings, homes and landmarks across the country will be illuminated green to show support for v e t erans and raise awareness around the resources available at the county, state and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.

Residents, businesses and other organizations are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb inside or outside their home to a green bulb. By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported, and we open up conversation about the needs of veterans and the services that support veteran communities.

Counties and residents across the country are sharing their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreen-Light.

In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, the Greenwood County Health Department saught approval for a Proclomation in support of Operation Green Light participation locally. Greenwood County Commissioners passed the proclamation on Oct. 14. The Greenwood County Health Department has a limited amount of green light bulbs for the community to pick up. It is asked that one green light bulb per household be acquired, and will be first come first serve. Green light bulbs will also be available, while supplies last, in Hamilton: at the Hamilton Public Library from 2:30-6 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday; in Madison: at the Madison Public Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and in Severy: at the city building from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
