The Livestock Judging Team of Lyle Perrier, Corinne Nelson, TJ Mills and Hannah Perrier were named State Champions at the 2024 Kansas FFA State Contests on April 30. H. Perrier was fifth high individual overall and sixth in oral reasons. L. Perrier claimed sixth high individual overall and ninth in oral reasons. Nelson won the oral reasons division. The team will represent the State of Kansas at the National Livestock Judging Contest in late October in Indianapolis, Ind.
Three people were able to escape serious injuries after being involved in separate accidents last week.
Jennifer Watts presented the weekly report for the Road and Bridge Department, on Monday, May 6, during the weekly meeting of the Greenwood County Commission. Watts shared that cleaning and removal of debris from roads and bridges continues. Though this is ongoing, everything is now passable. Watts noted that pertinent data was collected and provided to Emergency Management Director Levi Vinson for submission to FEMA. The county will then wait to see if work/debris created in recent weather events will be accepted for receipt of funding.
Many people serve as caregivers to help a loved one manage an illness or injury. The senior housing resource A Place for Mom says, between 2015 and 2020, the number of unpaid caregivers increased from 43.5 million to more than 53 million. Many caregivers assist seniors, but some also help younger adults with physical or mental disabilities.

On Friday, May 10, the Madison High School National Honors Society will host a blood drive at the high school, located at 1550 Southwest Boulevard, in Madison, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The East Central Kansas Model T (ECKMT) Club meets the second Thursday of the month. The ECKMT’s will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 in the conference room of the Burlington Kansas Library. The Library is located on Highway 75 in Burlington. The main entrĂ© and drinks will be provided. Those attending are asked to bring a side dish to share with the meal which will be eaten before the meeting.
The family of Alan Hatcher has requested a card shower in honor of his 50th birthday on Wednesday, May 15.
Community member Pam Kurtz was on the Eureka City Council agenda for Monday, April 23 to discuss the storm siren at Eureka Lake. Kurtz read a statement covering her research into storm sirens, which was prompted after the Eureka Lake siren failed to sound during a recent storm.
