Mayor Richard Clark called the October 16 meeting of the Howard City Council to order at 7:30 p.m. with council members Martin Hunter, Jerrad Pope, Gary Harrod and Derek Cookson present. Council member Erica Cordell was absent. Also present was Joanna Hunter.
The Soup Social for November was held with 20 individuals in attendance. Children from the Wonder Room made corn cob center pieces.
For the eighth consecutive year, community members will be coming together to share the Christmas spirit with their neighbors by blessing those around them with a box of food for a Christmas Dinner. The Eureka Wellspring was formed in December of 2016 with a small group of willing volunteers and a few monetary and food donations. The group intended to assemble holiday meal baskets for 10-15 local families, but gained enough interest to help more than 30.

Greenwood County Hospital (GWCH) Auxiliary met for their monthly meeting on November 6 at the GWCH basement.

Long-time Madison City Fire Chief Tim Melton submitted his letter of resignation during the Madison City Council meeting on November 6. Melton advised the council there was no specific reason for his resignation, just that it was time for him to step down from that position that he has held for several years. Mayor Paul Dean expressed appreciation for Melton’s years of service and the letter was accepted. Melton stated he will stay on as a volunteer in the fire department and that the fire department will present who they elect as the next fire chief to the council for final approval.
The Eureka Junior High wrestling team concluded their short season last Friday, as they competed at their sixth and final tournament of the year in Coffeyville. Eureka also held their annual tournament last Thursday.
