A special open house is planned for this Friday, Jan. 12, for the new elementary facility at West Elk USD 282. The event will coincide with the Patriots basketball game against Argonia. The FCA will be hosting a baked potato bar and silent action and the Little Patriots Cheer will perform during halftime of the boys game.

Greenwood County Commissioners began their first meeting of 2024 with reorganization of the board. Approval was received for Commissioner Ben Fox to serve as Chairman and Commissioner Mac Obourn to serve as Vice Chair.

As 2023 concluded, Eureka’s Steve Brown found himself closing his term of ownership of the local radio station. Brown purchased the radio station in April 2018 and continued the country music station for Eureka and the surrounding area. But, as 2024 began, listeners learned that the station had sold to Steckline Communications. The acquisition of Coyote 93.9FM gave the Stecklines their 14th radio station in the state of Kansas.

A Severy family is still seeking answers, a year later, after their two-yearold full white pitty mix, Iris, was shot while the family was on a walk on their property on Jan. 5, 2023.

New Year’s resolutions tend to focus heavily on healthy aspirations. Each January, people from all walks of life express a desire to lose weight, exercise more, quit smoking, or get more sleep. However, that doesn’t mean that resolutions cannot involve fun with friends.

It’s that time again to fill out those end-of-year reports. The Hamilton City Library has had an exciting 2023. Three grants have been awarded to the library this year-just to name a few! Lots of work and preparation during 2022 made a couple of grants happen and patrons turned out to see what it was all about. Jan. 3, 2023 began the all-time favorite event “The Spice of the Month Club.” Hamilton Library was given 20 packets prepared by the Greenwood County Extension Office in Eureka with the first spice, “Chinese Five Spice” plus two recipes and an informative history sheet telling about the spice. About 10 days later, all 20 packets were handed out and the team of Greenwood County libraries decided to increase the distribution for the next spice. For the rest of the year, the library handed out 35 packets each month. Over 35 people were signed up so they looked forward to picking up their spice bags at the earliest possible time.

Eighteen members and one guest met for a Eureka Music Club business meeting and program at the Eureka Christ Lutheran Church on Monday, Dec. 11. Carla Cook and Rise Russin served as co-hostesses. Sheri Hall, co-president, conducted the monthly business meeting.
