On Saturday, Feb. 10, 4-H members competed at the Greenwood County 4-H Club Day. Greenwood County 4-H’ers showed their talents, skills, and abilities to qualify for Regional 4-H Days. Several youths qualified to compete at Regionals, scheduled for Saturday, March 23 at the Madison High School. Seven area counties compete at Regional 4-H Day.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s (KDHE) Kansas Newborn Screening Program (KS-NBS) began screening for X-Linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (XALD) at the start of the month. The move aligns with the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel, which is the national guideline for newborn screening.

Licensed Operator Dean Hermesch attended last week’s Hamilton City Council meeting after being contacted by an official. Hermesch was requested to attend to afford for discussion of him covering responsibilities associated with water/sewer while the city superintendent position remains unfilled. While present, Hermesch shared that he had retired from a similar capacity with the City of Olpe a year ago and has since been filling in parttime as needed. Following discussion of mileage, as Hermesch resides near Olpe, and compensation, members of the council approved hiring him as a contract laborer. A rate of $25 for one weekly visit for an hour, 45 miles round trip at .67 cents per mile and $20 an hour if additional hours are required were included in discussion. Estimated pay per month was shared at $220. The position of City Superintendent remains open for application submissions.
The Feb. 6 meeting of the Greenwood County Historical Society board was called to order by President Mike Pitko, with the introduction of Taylor Hunt, new board member elected in December 2023.
The Community Benefit Women’s Educational Club (WEC), Greenwood County, held their monthly meeting at the Eureka United Methodist Church, at noon on Feb. 15. Hostess was Rev. Linda Pope. Eighteen members answered roll call by sharing a nickname.
