Madison/Virgil USD 386 Board of Education

The Monday, May 13 Madison/Virgil USD 386 Board of Education meeting was called to order by President Dallas Luthi at 7:01 p.m. Roll call was answered by Jennifer Watts, Dallas Luthi, Ty Gaines, Justin Isch, Gary Kile, Amy Hind and Jannette Luthi. Also attending were Superintendent Tammy Baird, Kristy Johnson, Amanda Schild, Dacia Brandt, Jenn Boles and Lily Hudson. Marcie Harrison joined the meeting at 7:15 p.m. Mark Adams joined at 7:30 p.m.

The agenda with changes, April regular board meeting minutes, business by consent (accounts payable, treasurer’s report and activity fund report), KASB 2024-2025 Membership Renewal with Season Pass and renewal of KASB Legal Assistance Fund contract for 2024-2025, and the non-resident enrollment capacity as presented were approved.

Boles spoke during public forum regarding the cross country team attending an out-of-state camp. The board approved motion to allow the Madison cross country team to travel to Pueblo, Colo., for a cross country camp with transportation included. Boles and Hudson left the meeting at 7:11 p.m.

The board approved the resignations of Patrick Sweet as Band/Vocal Instructor, Forensics, and Play sponsor, Jenn Boles as sophomore class sponsor, Zach Nuessen as senior class sponsor, Alana Engle as senior class sponsor, and the retirement of Julie Buster as school nurse.

A special meeting will be held regarding end-of-year budget transfers.

A student work-study for Justin Buchman at Boomtown was approved.

Adams gave a transportation update. Following the update, the board approved the purchase of 22-1 bus and leasing 22-2 bus on a three-year contract.

Brandt gave an update on the Opaa food service contract. Brandt left the meeting at 8:02 p.m. Information items discussed were updates on the Ag building, Summerzone and K.S.A. 72-6262. Principal Schild gave an update on MES end-of-year activities. Superintendent Baird gave updates on maintenance projects and timelines.

The board held a 15-minute executive session for personnel matters. After returning to open session, the board approved hiring Luke Wilson as the assistant High School football coach for the 2024-2025 school year; Zach Nuessen as assistant High School boys basketball coach for the 2024-2025 school year; Jami Williams, Connie Kelley and Nate Teichgraeber as summer help; Thomas Scott as K-12 Instrumental/ Vocal Teacher for the 2024-2025 school year; Ryan Wolgram as assistant Junior High football coach for the 20242025 school year; and Curtis Brunk as summer maintenance help. The board held two executive sessions, totaling 50-minutes, with the board and Superintendent Baird to discuss the teacher contract negotiations. No decisions were made.

The board approved allowing seniors to purchase their laptops at a depreciated value set by the administration, with the remaining unsold laptops being sold to Tech to School.

The board also approved a motion to accept a gift of $2,500 for FFA and $2,500 for the Music department, in memory of Terry Fankhauser.

The meeting adjourned at 9:53 p.m.

The Madison/Virgil USD 386 Board of Education meets monthly on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m.
