One senior, two juniors and one sophomore from Eureka Junior/Senior High School traveled to Kansas City, Mo., over the weekend to compete in the American Royal Livestock judging contest. The Eureka FFA members, comprised of senior Lyle Perrier, juniors Corinne Nelson and TJ Mills and sophomore Hannah Perrier not only represented the local chapter, but represented the State of Kansas.
Council Chairman Kevin Lawrence discussed previous structures tore down by the city, noting that all others had been demolished as they caused concern for public safety. The city will continue through the code enforcement process and will look to schedule a public hearing date during their next meeting.
Former West Elk wrestling coach Kevin Weber was presented with the inaugural Doug Vander Linden “Character in Coaching” award, during the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association banquet earlier this month.
In just a little over three weeks, the annual Greenwood County Cattlemen’s Day event will be held. Organizers are once again looking to host events throughout the day, with the banquet concluding the festivities at Memorial Hall.
For approximately five years, the City of Severy has been working towards a new water plant. In 2018, residents of Severy gathered for a town hall meeting where they opted to keep their water plant instead of going with PWS #23.
Patsy Ruth Frakes of Eureka, died on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka, at the age of 91. She was born on April 2, 1932, in Pratt, the daughter of Dorsey and Bonnie (Collins) Moon. She was raised in Pratt and attended local schools. While still in school she met Clarence Lee “Pete” Frakes. They were united in marriage on August 15, 1947, in Miami, Texas. To this union, three daughters were born. They made their home in Latham.
Brandon Lee Endress of El Dorado, died on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Kansas Medical Center, in Andover, at the age of 39. He was born on May 1, 1984, in Wichita, the son of Randy Scott and Robin Lee (McFall) Endress. He was raised in Eureka and graduated from Eureka Junior Senior High School with the Class of 2003. Brandon played football and did track and wrestling in school. He was a loyal and true fan of Florida State, as everyone around him knew well. He loved to fish and he loved his dogs. But, above everything else, he loved his family, especially his children. He will be remembered most for his smile.
