Seventeen members of the Eureka Wrestling Club (EWC) claimed hardware at the Iola Tournament. EWC’s Graham Bechtel, Elena McCoy and Brynlee Ashlock all were named champions. Jad Day, Kade Fisher, Carson Eismann, Brandon Cornett, Tate Scott and Cort Decker were named Runners- Up. EWC’s Oaklyn Smith, Tucker Williams, Jackson Hobbs, Xander Turner and Felix Neill placed third and Kaydenn Winn, Keon Jones and Adleigh Ray placed fourth.
Lady Tornadoes Claimed 14th Victory Of The Season
West Elk Patriots will be represented by three wrestlers this week at the 3-1A boys state tournament in Salina, as senior Evan Coble, junior Creyo Koop and sophomore Edward Metcalf all punched their tickets to the state tournament.
West Elk Patriot basketball competed at Flinthills last Tuesday, Feb. 13 going head-to-head with the Mustangs.
The Eureka Tornado boys played two games last week, a loss to Erie at home and a win against Cherryvale on the road. Both games demonstrated that the Tornadoes continue to improve as the season progresses. In both games, the Tornadoes offense showed major signs of coming to life as their shooting was more effective and their turnovers were in the acceptable range.
A total of 18 Elk County Wrestling (ECW) club members claimed hardware at the Fredonia Open/Novice/Girls tournament on Sunday, Feb. 18.
Against Cherryvale, the Tornadoes ended each half blistering hot from the field and the charity stripe, effectively ending any chance Cherryvale had to pull out the win. The Chargers started hitting shots in the second half themselves, but the Tornadoes kept them at arm’s length with strong rebounding and good defense. Eureka’s leading scorer was Jace Nixon with 22 points. Laken Valentine had 15, Lyle Perrier had 12, Cole Adkins had 11 and Cole Ptacek added 3. Adkins and Perrier led the Tornadoes in rebounding with 11 and 9 respectively.
On Saturday, Feb. 10, 4-H members competed at the Greenwood County 4-H Club Day. Greenwood County 4-H’ers showed their talents, skills, and abilities to qualify for Regional 4-H Days. Several youths qualified to compete at Regionals, scheduled for Saturday, March 23 at the Madison High School. Seven area counties compete at Regional 4-H Day.
Tornado freshman Mason Hughes claimed a fourth place finish at the Eureka 3-1A Regional Wrestling tournament last Saturday and punched his first ticket to the state tournament this Thursday-Saturday, in Salina.
