What To Know About Fireworks Injuries

Fireworks are a common sight at various celebrations throughout the year, but are most prominent during the summer months when Canada Day and Independence Day are celebrated. Fireworks have been in use for thousands of years. Many historians believe fireworks were developed in Liuyang, China, in the second century B.C. The first “fireworks” were made from bamboo stalks that, when thrown into a fire, would explode due to hollow pockets of air in the bamboo, says the American Pyrotechnic Association. Eventually early gunpowder recipes provided the boom behind the fireworks, and modern fireworks are not very different from those early incarnations.

Hamilton USD 390 Received $10,000 Cash For Classrooms Grant From Casey’s To Purchase New Music Instruments

Hamilton USD 390 is a 2024 Casey’s Cash for Classrooms grant recipient. The school will receive $10,000 to purchase new music instruments for the upcoming school year. Part of this grant will also be used to purchase a new keyboard/piano for music teacher, Mrs. Lora McDonald. USD 390 provides all music students with an instrument to use so that all students have an equal opportunity to participate. This grant will be highly influential in updating and adding to the current inventory.

Severy City Council Held Monthly Meeting
Severy City Council Held Monthly Meeting

Greenwood County Emergency Management Director Levi Vinson presented the Severy City Council with the Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) and a resolution regarding the Region H Hazard Mitigation Plan, during their regular monthly meeting on June 3. During discussion, Vinson shared that storm testing would move from Mondays at 6 p.m. to Tuesdays at 1 p.m. in August or first part of September. This will allow for more staff to be available at the time of testing. It was also shared that the City of Severy’s siren is not working properly; however, city employees will work to assess the matter. The council approved both the MOU and Resolution 2024-06 as presented. With the approval, the city council will now be able to apply for additional programs/grants if interested. Vinson will share information with Clerk Tessa Riggs as various items become available.

Members of the Eureka High School (EHS) Class of 1984 held several gatherings throughout the weekend of June 1416 to celebrate their 40year class reunion. Class members met at various restaurants in Eureka, for breakfast, lunch and dinner and celebrated on Saturday at the Greenwood Hotel.
