Reverend John E. Schroeppel

The Reverend John E. Schroeppel, 86, of Hutchinson, died October 4, 2024, at his home. He was born April 17, 1938, in New Ulm, MN, to John Earl and Alice (Swenson) Schroeppel Sr.

Jack, as he was known to many, graduated from Winthrop High School in 1956, where he excelled in athletics. John attended the University of Minnesota, Gustavus Adolphus College and graduated from Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary. In 1986, he received his Doctor of Ministry degree from the Graduate Theological Foundation, which met on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.

John was ordained into the ministry on May 28, 1968, in Christ Chapel at Gustavus Adolphus College. He served congregations in Cape Girardeau, MO, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada and Manly and Griswold, Iowa, before moving to Hutchinson in 1994 to serve as pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church, retiring in 2001. John loved being outdoors, gardening, hunting, fishing, and especially being at the cabin on Horseshoe Lake, MN.

On September 7, 1980, he married Anne E. (Jackson) Casper, in Winthrop, MN. They shared 44 years of marriage. She survives.

Also surviving are: his children, Stephen Casper (Tonya) of Eureka, Dr. John Paul Schroeppel (Mandy) of Leawood, Peter Schroeppel of Hutchinson, Dr. Sarah Schroeppel DeBacker (Christopher) of Boston, MA; grandchildren, Ashleigh, Austin, Annaliese Casper, Addison, Payton, John Pierce Schroeppel, Nathaniel John and Theodore DeBacker; siblings, Douglas Schroeppel (Nancy) of Buffalo, MN, Kay Ferris (Brad) of Backus, MN, Sue Coulter of Crosslake, MN; sister-in-law, Karen Schroeppel of Plano, TX; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Roger Schroeppel.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 140 E 30th Ave., Hutchinson. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in Upper Fall River Lutheran Church Cemetery near Eureka.

The service will be livestreamed on the church’s You-Tube channel.

Friends signed his memorial book from 1-5 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. The family received friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Emanuel Lutheran Church.
