Following one addition (IdeaTek Ordinance) and the removal of one item (Eureka Days) from the slate on Monday, Jan. 8, Eureka City Council members began making their way through their first meeting agenda of the year.

After months of draught conditions, City Council members shared on Monday, Jan. 8 that the most recent reading at the W-7 water source was at 92% water level. It was noted that this figure could be higher than that given the continued receipt of moisture. This is up from the 72% reading collected on Dec. 8, 2023.

Ordinance 4328, a franchise agreement with IdeaTek Telecommunications LLC., was presented by a representative. During discussion, the representative present shared that they were still looking to begin work in February and notified members of the council that they had won the RFP (Request for Proposal) put out by the local school. As work unfolds, there are to be weekly check-ins. The installation fee associated with the service is $100. This brings service from the box and in the process, line is buried to the home. Mayor Stephen Coulter notified members of the council that the city attorney had not reviewed the ordinance yet. Further time will be provided for review and this will be presented for approval during the next meeting.

Members of the council approved the consent agenda. This included the following items: Minutes of the Dec. 29, 2023 meeting and minutes of the Dec. 29, 2023 special meeting and scheduled claims list of expenses due through Dec. 27, 2023 for the amount of $146,161.89. The City of Eureka is still in the process of conducting interviews for the City Administrator position. An interview slated for last Monday was canceled due to winter weather. It was noted that this was looking to be rescheduled for Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. at Memorial Hall.

In new employments, officials shared that Steve French was hired for Code Enforcement Officer and Jerry Rushmore had been hired for the Street/Dog Catcher position. Rushmore is pictured inset. A photo of French was unavailable at the time of publication.

The next meeting of the Eureka City Council will be held on Monday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.
