Four Lady Tornado wrestlers traveled to Newton last Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 10 and 11 for the third annual girls Newton Tournament, where several ranked wrestlers were expected to compete.
Two Lady Tornado seniors, Lyndsey Escareno and Makyla Gore, battled their way to the championship where they lost decisions to ranked wrestlers. Escareno lost a 2-7 decision to Slifer of Manhattan who is currently ranked fourth in the 140 pound class in 6-5A girls. Gore lost a 1-5 decision to Stean of Tonganoxie who is ranked third in the 170-pound glass in the 4-1A girls class.
Lady Tornado sophomore Harlie Owings placed sixth at the tournament. Also representing Eureka was freshman Maela Neill.
“These girls wrestled really tough against some great competition! The best is yet to come for this group,” stated head coach Thomas Lowe. Come watch them in action this Saturday in Eureka.
Following are the results for Eureka participants: 125: Maela Neill (13-6) received a bye; won by fall over Caitlin Van Praag (Derby) 10-8 (Fall 1:52); lost by fall to Lydia Dong (Salina Central) 21-4 (Fall 1:38); and lost by fall to Amara Dossett (McPherson) 6-8 (Fall 4:17).
140: Lyndsey Escareno (4-2) placed 2nd. She received a bye; won by fall over Addison Bouthillette (Valley Center) 5-10 (Fall 0:20); won by fall over Eryn Templeton (Emporia) 13-11 (Fall 3:22); won a 7-6 decision over Ninel Garcia (Salina South) 199; and lost a 2-7 decision to Alayna Slifer (Manhattan) 14-4.
170: Makyla Gore (14-5) placed 2nd. She received a bye; won by fall over Morgan Barber (Seneca) 8-12 (Fall 1:01); won by fall over Chloe Spears (Derby) 18-4 (Fall 1:10); won by fall over Gabriella Grogg (Manhattan ) 15-13 (Fall 1:55); and lost a 1-5 decision to Grace Stean (Tonganoxie) 15-4.
190: Harlie Owings (128) placed 6th. She received a bye; won by forfeit over Mia Poppa (Andover) 3-10; won by fall over Analicia Lopez (Derby) 8-4 (Fall 2:22); lost a 0-8 major decision to Morgan Miller (Blue Valley Southwest) 13-3; lost by fall to Xaxvel Piedra (Stilwell) 4-2 (Fall 3:50); and lost by fall to Braylie Knisley (Douglass) 12-7 (Fall 2:54).

The Lady Tornadoes will host a junior varsity mixer this Friday, Jan. 19, beginning at 4:30 p.m. and will host their annual tournament on Saturday, Jan. 20, beginning at 9 a.m. Eureka will then compete at a Fort Scott Mixer on Jan. 22, at 4:30 p.m.
