Has our state been magically transported to the Arctic? We’ve had enough extreme cold and snow. It can move on to Spring now. We hope y’all stayed safe and warm this past week. This bone chilling cold has got to go! Minus temps and wind chills can be dangerous.

The weather people kept talking over the weekend about “Flash Freezing.” I had never heard that term before. And now that I’ve heard it, I don’t want to hear of it again. Many churches in our area cancelled services Sunday due to the extreme cold.

I have been outside several times these cold, cold days. When Punky could still see, all I had to do was open the back door and she would run out and go do her thing. Now that she is blind, I have to take her outside. It doesn’t take long for her to do her thing though.

Question: Which professional team first introduced the “high five?”

We offer our sympathy to all who lost loved ones this past week. May they rest in peace.

We had to go to Fredonia the other day and we saw several eagles on the way down and back. I don’t know why it is, but I can be having a bad day and see an eagle and all my troubles are washed away.

Often we see one on the east side of the Verdigris River bridge (Marr’s bridge) on Decater Road and then out in the open field on the west side of Harper Road approximately 2 1/2 miles north of the six mile corner.

The one we saw the other day was about 1/2 mile south of the old pig farm on Harper Road. Have you been watching for them as you’ve been out and about lately?

Answer: While plenty of people have high-fived before, few are aware of its intriguing history. Its origin can be traced back to Glenn Burke, an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who spontaneously high-fived fellow teammate Dusty Baker during a baseball game in 1977. After Dusty hit a home run, his rookie teammate eagerly awaited his arrival as he crossed home plate. In a moment of excitement, Glenn instinctively raised his arm high in the air, leaving Dusty unsure of how to respond, so he slapped it. Recounting the moment, Baker said, “It seemed like the thing to do.” And the rest, as they say, is history...

We still have extreme cold in the forecast so bundle up if you have to go outside and make sure your outside pets have a place to get in out of the weather.

Did you watch the Chief’s play Saturday? I found a later rerun of the game to record and watched Sunday morning. I am not going to subscribe to a streaming channel to watch a game. The powers that be will know how many new subscribers there were for the game and if they see that there is a market for payper- view for championship games, then they will go to that.

It’s too bad they can’t see, also, how many new subscribers cancelled their subscription within 2-3 days after the game.

I noticed that Andy Reid had a frozen mustache during the game. I’m sure he was not the only one. I can’t even imagine what it was like in Arrowhead Stadium.
