Family Continues To Search For Answers

A Severy family is still seeking answers, a year later, after their two-yearold full white pitty mix, Iris, was shot while the family was on a walk on their property on Jan. 5, 2023.

A Severy family is still seeking answers, a year later, after their two-yearold full white pitty mix, Iris, was shot while the family was on a walk on their property on Jan. 5, 2023.

According to Brian and Cristen Calvin, the couple, along with their dogs, went for a walk in their pasture, located approximately a half mile south of the Greenwood County line, in Elk County, that evening around 5 p.m. The walk was cut short when the Calvins heard gunshots, and they returned back to their house.

When Iris didn’t return, the duo returned to the pasture to locate the dog. Cristen found Iris suffering from a single gunshot wound and immediately began calling veterinarians. At approximately 8 p.m., Iris succumbed to injuries and passed away.

The Calvins reached out to neighboring property owners, but, it is still unknown who may have been hunting at that time.

Last Thursday, Jan. 4, Elk County Sheriff Johnny Walker shared the case remained open, noting that a geofence warrant was being requested. A geofence warrant, a special investigative tactic, allows law enforcement to request data from all cellphone and mobile device users in a specific location at a given time. The search can identify potential witnesses, as well as suspects involved in crimes. The Calvins continue to seek information and are offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to charges being filed in the case. Those with information are asked to contact the Elk County Sheriff’s Office at 620-374 2108.
