Are you or someone you know a diabetic or pre-diabetic? Do you want to learn more about a healthy diet? Then I would encourage you to sign-up for the Dining with Diabetes online series.
This course is a selfpaced, online class that helps participants address the health concerns of a disease that affects 1 in 9 Kansas adults.
The course incorporates five sessions. The first session will open on Jan. 8, and go through Feb. 5. The Final follow-up Module will open on March 4. Participants will have the chance to take the classes at their own pace that you can sit down and do all in one afternoon or maybe you choose to do it in one evening after work. The course will cover the basics of meal planning, carbohydrate counting, portion control, reading labels and physical activity.
The point of this is to not only provide education, but to also provide a support system for individuals in making lifestyle choices and changes related to diabetes. When you take this course, it is important to understand that you won’t have a live instructor because you will be taking the classes on your own time and at your convenience. However, you can still contact the instructor afterwards and share a dialogue to brainstorm solutions to issues that you may encounter.
The American Diabetes Association estimates that diabetes costs Kansans $2.4 billion per year in direct medical expenses and indirect costs; and for those who are hospitalized for diabetes-
the average hospital stay is four days. Nationally, 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year. In the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled, according to the ADA. Also, one dollar out of every four in U.S. health care costs is spent on caring for people with diabetes. This course is not just for those with diabetes. It could be for someone who may not currently have diabetes, but wants to learn more about or want to learn how to make lifestyle changes to prevent the onset of the disease.
