“Year In Review 2023”

(July - September)

(July - September)

Residents of Greenwood County, and the surrounding area, were impacted by summer storms and over the weekend of August 5-6, Madison was hit with high winds that caused extensive damage to the school’s gymnasium.

As pictured above, the roof above the gymnasium/ weight room rolled back, exposing layers underneath to additional concerns.

On Sunday morning, Aug. 6, 2023 school staff, board members and community members gathered at the school to assess the damage and begin clean up efforts. While there, they discovered that the damage also caused a major gas leak. According to the Kansas Gas Service, the leak occurred between 12 and 1 a.m.

Interior damage was also reported, as rain water made its way to the gym floor through the newly exposed roof.

The storm also caused many to go without power for a few hours as several poles had broke off at the ground, approximately four miles south of Madison. Evergy crews were able to get the power restored to the majority of residents within a few hours.

While the heaviest damage was believed to have occurred at Madison High School, many residents reported minor damages to property as well as trees that had been uprooted.
