Three area Elk County Wrestling club wrestlers traveled to Independence, Mo., on Saturday, April 8, 2023 for the Adidas National wrestling tournament. Tristen Mast and Emma Baumgartel both were named National Champions as they went undefeated in their divisions. Kash Bidwell placed sixth at the tournament.
As a team, the boys finished 64th, out of a total 201 represented. Baumgartel placed 39th out of 104 teams in the girls division.
Baumgartel, a then sixth grader at Marshall Elementary School in Eureka, defeated Kennedy Portlock (Trailhands) by fall 1:08; won a 5-4 decision in sudden victory over Paityn Whitaker (DC Gold) and won a 7-0 decision over Chloe Green (Team Oklahoma). She is the daughter of Jerrid and Jessica Baumgartel of Severy. She is the granddaughter of Roger and Carolyn Baumgartel of Emporia, Cheryle and Dan Edwards of Yates Center, Robert and Teresa Gulick of Eureka and Tom and Sheryl Hare of Toronto.
Mast, a then first grader at West Elk, won a 4-1 decision over Ethan Perkins (Beebe Youth Wrestling); by fall over Vance Hare (King Select) and by fall over Ja’Kel Ziegenfus (Springdale Youth Wrestling) 2:56. He is the son of Cody and Whitney Mast of Moline. He is the grandson of Jim and Debbie Roebuck of Howard and Brian and Cristen Calvin of rural Severy.
Bidwell, a then third grader at West Elk, won a 10-2 major decision over Wyatt Geiger (Ogden’s Outlaws Wrestling) and a 5-0 decision over Liam Darr (King Select). He is the son of Miles and Kactus Bidwell of Severy. He is the grandson of Donna Wiss of Severy, Vicki and David Roeder of Coffeyville and Ken Kelly and Tracy Williams of Severy.
