Discussed Establishment Of Board Coined Greenwood County Community Center

Greenwood County Commissioners heard a presentation, on Monday, March 27, 2023 proposing for the Eureka Downs to serve as a community facility. Jamie Nelson, Jamie Lindamood, then Eureka City Council member Heather Lewis and Mayor for the City of Eureka Stephen Coulter spoke towards the establishment of a 501c3 organization under the heading of Greenwood County Community Center (GCCC). This will not serve as a name for the facility, but rather stand as a title for the board overseeing it. The establishment of a 501c3 provides access to grant funding that could aid in revitalization of the facility. After discussing volunteer hours to-date that have been invested in cleaning/improving the building, Nelson shared that both levels of Eureka Downs would be utilized for the 2023 Greenwood County Fair.

After referencing involved organizations including the 4-H Foundation, Greenwood County Commission, Fair Board and the Eureka City Council, Lindamood shared that the goal is to transform the space. Among priorities for the structure, Nelson noted that the heating and air system would be one item necessary to make it a usable facility. After stating that she felt, if money were going to be invested into a facility, it should be one that is going to be of great benefit to the community, Lewis noted that it was vital that all parties are on board together.
