The Eureka Tornadoes played in the annual Marion Classic basketball tournament this past week in Marion. The Tornadoes opened tournament play with a 55-40 loss to Berean Academy. The second game they played was a loss to host Marion High School, 55-41. They lost the third game, to Halstead High School, 73-51. Despite losing every game in the tournament, the Tornado cagers played really well.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of the tournament games was the fact that the Tornadoes won the fourth quarter of each one. While they opened each game playing sluggishly and were therefore careless with the ball, they settled down all three nights. Their second halves were characterized by good defense, fewer turnovers, and, at least compared to their first halves, better rebounding. It is also noteworthy that none of the three opponents they faced felt comfortable enough during the Tornadoes’ onslaught in the fourth quarter to play their younger players. This in itself is an indication of how far the Eureka basketball team has progressed.

Tornado senior Cole Adkins competed in the 3-point contest, where he made it to the finals.

Adkins, along with fellow senior Lyle Perrier, were also named to the All-Academic Team.
