Patriot Wrestling Opened Season At Burlington

The West Elk Patriot wrestling teams opened their winter season last Friday, December 1, at the Wildcat Duals in Burlington. Patriot junior Creyo Koop went 5-0 at the tournament and was named to the All-Tournament team. He also pinned the four opponents he faced, with a combined total of 1:05 for the second place finish with the most pins in the fastest time. He won by default against Iola. Taking top honors was Isaiah Lowe of Maize South who pinned all five of his opponents with a combined time of 4:46.

As a team, the Patriots went 2-3 for the day, defeating Overland Park-Blue Valley Southwest and Burlington to place seventh at the duals tournament. The Patriots were open in the 106, 113, 120, 126, 138, 144, 150 and 285-pound weight classes.

Following are the individual results for Patriot wrestlers:

Match #1 Against Topeka-Washburn Rural With the open weight classes, the Patriots fell behind by 42, as the opposing team was awarded six-points for those default wins. Both teams were open in the 113-pound weight class. Koop (165) picked up the lone victory for the Patriots with a pin over Brenner Beninga (Fall 0:18). Patriots Evan Coble (132) lost by fall to Easton Broxterman, (Fall 3:25); Nolan Denton (157) lost by fall to Brody Byrne, (Fall 1:08); Josh Patteson (175) lost by fall to Jadyn Baum, (Fall 1:34); Landon Wunderlich (190) lost by fall to Bryce Shaffer, (Fall 2:57); and Boedy Murphy (215) lost by fall to Baron Blankenship, (Fall 1:24). West Elk fell to Topeka- Washburn Rural, 7-72.

Match #2 Against Iola Only one match was held against Iola, with Patriot Wunderlich (190) claiming the win over Franklin Kerr, (Fall 1:49). West Elk’s Coble (132), Denton (157), Koop (165), Patteson (175) and Murphy (215) won by default. The Patriots lost to Iola, 36-48.

Match #3 Overland Park Blue Valley Southwest The Patriots picked up their first victory of the night with a 33-30 win over Overland Park-Blue Valley. Patriots Coble (132), Denton (157), Patteson (175) and Wunderlich (190) won by default. West Elk lost by default in the 113, 138, 144, 150 and 285-pound weight class. Both teams were open in the 106, 120 and 126 classes. Securing the win was Koop (165) who recorded six points for the Patriots with a win by fall over Eric Nelson (Fall 0:20); and West Elk’s Murphy who added two team points with a 2-1 decision in sudden victory over Bennett Bahr.

Match #4 Eudora

Five Patriots took to the mat in the fourth dual of the evening with two of them coming away with pins. Patriot Coble (132) pinned Hawken Andrews (Fall 0:54) and Creyo Koop (165) pinned Stephen Fletcher (Fall 0:09). West Elk’s Denton (157) lost by fall to Alex Clobes (Fall 2:52); Patteson (175) lost by fall to Max Mitchell (Fall 2:17); and Wunderlich (190) lost by fall to Reilly Neis (Fall 1:15). The Patriots lost by default in the 106, 120, 126, 138, 144 and 150 weight classes. West Elk’s Murphy (215) won by default and both teams were open in the 113 and 285 weight classes. The Patriots lost to Eudora, 18-54.

Match #5 Burlington

In the seventh place match, the Patriots defeated Burlington, 30-24. The Patriots lost by default in the 106, 138 and 150-pound weight classes. West Elk picked up four pins against the Wildcats with wins from: Evan Coble (132) over Ethan Bartley (Fall 0:49); Denton (157) over Logan Turner (Fall 2:25); Koop (165) over Kyzer Lehmann (Fall 0:18); and Josh Patteson (175) over Bowen McIntosh (Fall 1:44). Patriot Murphy (251) won by default. Patriot Wunderlich (190) lost by fall to Brayden Riggs (Fall 0:41).

Lady Patriots

Lady Patriots Marissa Ghramm (120) and Kayla Wright (125) also opened their season in Burlington last Friday, where they wrestled for other teams during the duals. Wright went 3-2 for the day and Ghramm was 2-2. Additional results were unavailable at the time of publication.

Up Next

This Saturday, December 9, the Patriots will travel to Hesston for their annual invitational, at 9 a.m. They will travel to Fredonia for dual action against the Yellowjackets and Erie on December 12 before competing in the Hillsboro Duals Tournament on December 15.
