Eureka Lady Tornado Wrestlers Opened 2023-24 Season At Burlington LadyCat Duals

Going into the LadyCat Duals mixer with nine open weight classes made it difficult for the Lady Tornadoes in their season opener, at Burlington last Friday, December 1. The Lady Tornadoes went 0-5 in dual action and placed eighth at the annual event.

Following are the results for Eureka participants:

Match #1 vs Tecumseh-Shawnee Heights

Eureka fell to Tecumseh- Shawnee Heights, 18-66, due to being open in nine of the 14 weight classes (100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 130, 135, 145 and 155). Three Lady Tornadoes claimed victories, all by fall over Tecumseh- Shawnee Heights. Eureka seniors Lyndsey Escareno (140) pinned Olivia Stevens, (Fall 2:28) and Makyla Gore (235) pinned Theo Ofuasia, (Fall 1:27); and sophomore Harlie Owings (190) pinned Shelby Watson (Tecumseh-Shawnee Heights HS) (Fall 0:32). Lady Tornado freshman Maela Neill (125) lost by fall to Reece Taylor (Fall 1:08) and Eureka sophomore Victoria Grado (170) lost by fall to McKinzie Carter (Fall 1:28).

Match #2 vs Burlington Eureka’s Owings (190) was the only Lady Tornado to come away with a victory as she picked up her second pin of the evening, defeating Jamee Posey with a fall in 0:39. Four Lady Tornadoes took to the mat against Burlington and lost by fall; Neill (125) lost by fall to Olivia Lyons Fall 0:51; Escareno (140) lost by fall to Haylei Potter (Fall 0:31); Grado (170) lost by fall to Carlee Cole (Fall 0:50); and Gore (235) lost by fall to Johanna Carrasco (Fall 2:44). Both teams were open in the 100, 135 and 145-pound weight classes and Eureka once again lost by default in the 105, 110, 115, 120, 130, 135, and 155-pound weight classes. Eureka lost to Burlington, 6-60.

Match #3 vs Topeka-Washburn Rural (Blue)

Four Lady Tornadoes recorded pins against Topeka- Washburn Rural (Blue) but open weight classes left them on the losing end of a 24-42 dual. Eureka’s Neill (125) pinned Michaela Hemphill (Fall 1:54); Grado (170) pinned Aytumn Sanchez (Fall 0:28); Owings (190) pinned Lily Davis (Fall 0:50); and Gore (235) pinned Eve Luea (Fall 0:31). Eureka lost by default in the 105, 115, 120, 130, 135, 145 and 155. Both teams were open in the 100, 110, 140, Match #3 vs Eudora Three Lady Tornadoes recorded 6 points each for Eureka; but, it wasn’t enough to claim the win over Eudora as the Tornadoes fell 18-39. Neill (125) pinned Peyten VanHorn (Fall 1:05); and Gore (235) pinned Ryan Bretthauer (Fall 1:58); and Lady Tornado Grado (170) won by default. Lady Tornado Owings (190) picked up her first loss of the season with a 2-6 decision against Reese Pattison. Both teams were open in the 100, 105, 110 and 115 weight classes with Eureka losing by default in the 120, 130, 135, 140, 145 and 155 weight classes.

Match #5 7th Place Match

Eureka faced Washburn Rural Black in their final match of the night and only allowed points due to open class matches. With the Tornadoes open in seven weight classes, Eureka gave up 42 points (six points per class) to Washburn Rural Black. Both teams were open in the 100, 105 and 135-pound weight class. Claiming wins for the Tornadoes were Neill (125) pinned Ericka Webb (Fall 0:14); Grado (170) pinned Emma May (Fall 2:36); Owings (190) pinned Kassidy Evans (Fall 0:49); and Gore (235) won by default.

The Lady Tornadoes travel to Chase County this Thursday for a jamboree, at 4 p.m. Eureka junior varsity wrestlers will then travel to a mixer in Coffeyville, beginning at 4 p.m.
