Patriots Named Regional Champions • To Face Lyndon This Friday

The West Elk Patriot football team moved to 9-1 for the year and continue on their road to state as they travel to Lyndon to take on the undefeated Tigers (10-0) this Friday, November 10, in the eightman division 1 playoffs.

The West Elk Patriot football team moved to 9-1 for the year and continue on their road to state as they travel to Lyndon to take on the undefeated Tigers (10-0) this Friday, November 10, in the eightman division 1 playoffs.

West Elk claimed a Regional title last Friday, at home, when they defeated Little River (7-2), 72-60.

“Very proud of the guys and their efforts to bring home a regional championship,” exclaimed head coach Chris Haag. “We have a tough test this coming week against Lyndon! Our guys are excited for this opportunity and look forward to the challenge this coming Friday,” he continued.

Against Little River, last Friday night, the Patriots were first to get on the board with a 6-yard run by Trent Haag to take the lead 6-0. Little River answered with six of their own before Patriot Creyo Koop found the end-zone on a twoyard rush. The two-point conversion attempt was good by T. Haag and the Patriots led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Redskins came out fierce in the second quarter, outscoring West Elk 22-20. Little River scored twice before the Patriots got on the board with 14-points of their own. Koop again found the end-zone on a 43-yard run and T. Haag scored on a 26-yard rush. T. Haag was also successful on one twopoint conversion attempt. Both teams would add another touchdown before halftime; but, the Redskins added 8 compared to the Patriots 6 and West Elk retained the lead at the break, 34-28.

West Elk dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Redskins 24-8. All three Patriot touchdowns were rushes. One a 30yard run by T. Haag and the next two by Koop, one 3-yard and one 45-yard run. Koop had 2 two-point conversion attempts and T. Haag found Maddex Moreno for a successful conversion of the third quarter. West Elk led the Redskins 58-36 going into the final quarter.

Little River would have their best scoring quarter in the fourth, scoring 24 points. Koop added another six for the Patriots on a 38-yard rush and Moreno scored the final touchdown of the game for the Patriots with a 26-yard run. T. Haag scored on the twopoint conversion attempt, bringing the Patriots score to 72. Little River would score one more touchdown in the game but West Elk held on to win the game, 72-60.

West Elk will now advance to the sectional round to face the Tigers of Lyndon. Lyndon claimed a 68-22 victory over South Sumner County.
