The burning of the Flint Hills has begun!
A right of passage for our ranchers here in Greenwood County… The true start of spring in Kansas.
The smoke filled skies and picturesque fires aren’t for fun or photo opportunities- these fires are saving the remaining 4% of the Tallgrass Prairie, which is said would become extinct in 40 years if not maintained.
Fire has been the best maintenance for these prairies for hundreds of years. What used to occur naturally with lightning, we have to do controlled now so not to also burn down structures in the prairie.
These ranchers along with many organizations even have their own smoke management plan. You can find it at KSfire.org to help not generate too much smoke to the surrounding cities.
Burning is important! So let’s help spread the good word and support these ranchers!
