Severy City Council Approved Road Grader Purchase During Special Meeting

The Severy City Council convened in a special meeting on Monday, March 24 to discuss the potential purchase of a road grader.

The purpose of the special meeting was for the consideration of acquiring a 1996 Caterpillar 135H Road Grader with 6,568 hours from Foley Equipment in St. Joe, Mo.

During the meeting, it was noted that the grader has undergone $7,700 in recent repairs. These include the installation of an operator’s manual, resealing of the lift cylinder, a full 500-hour service, and hydraulic maintenance. The council expressed interest in this particular model due to its age, low usage, articulating feature, and the absence of modern electronics and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), all of which are seen as advantageous for the City’s needs.

Councilman Lyle Riggs has requested oil samples from the seller for further inspection. At present, the city doesn’t have a reliable road grader. In August 2023, the city spent $10,087.20 to rent a grader for one month to repair Kansas Avenue.

To proceed, the Council would need to sign a sales agreement to transport the grader to Wichita for an in-person inspection. The agreement will be marked as pending customer inspection/approval, signaling the City’s intent to purchase but not completing the final transaction.

The council voted, 4-0, to proceed with the sales agreement, pending customer inspection.

Councilman Kevin Klepper was absent from the meeting.

The next scheduled meeting for the City of Severy is Monday, April 7, at 7 p.m.
