I will forever refer to this moment in history as the divide. I’m pretty sure most of us would agree that this moment in time is not one of America’s finest. Recently I have heard multiple people across numerous walks of life agree that the American system is broken. It is nothing to be proud of. My whole life I have seen neighbor against neighbor, and brother against sister. I look out at my nation: at all the discord, the confusion, fear and blatant hatred and I’m ashamed. Yes, ashamed. What person with compassion a clear sense of fair play and empathy in their heart can honestly say they are proud of every moment of American history? Well, proud or ashamed I was born here and this is my country.

As a child I sang “I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m Free.” In school we were taught to be proud we were free, because others were not so lucky. I was glad I had a home, food, warm clothes, and my faith. I could go to school and practice my religion. I also knew if I worked hard I would succeed. The constitution also promised that all people were created equal and could speak their mind. It did not matter if my blood was blue or red. All humans were created equal. Well, if we are all the same why is there so much discord and hate?

I ask myself, what made this country great? Do the ends always justify the means, and where do we draw the line. I believe there is a line, the ends don’t always justify the means. I have always believed that the ability to look at our history with honest eyes and try to do better is what made America great. People sticking together in times of need made America great. Why can’t we band together now. What or who has us so divided? What has pitted us against each other? Can we fix this?
