Madison Lady Bulldogs Concluded Season At Canton-Galva Sub-State
Lady Bulldogs Named Sub-State Runner-Up

The Madison Bulldog basketball season came to a close last week for both the girls and boys teams, with the Lady Bulldogs being named runner-up. The Lady Bulldogs fell to undefeated Little River (20-0) in the Sub-State Championship game on Friday, March 7.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored Little River, 42-40, in the last three quarters, but couldn’t overcome the 9-23 deficit they faced after the first quarter. Madison lost the game 57-71. Scoring for the Lady Bulldogs were Jalynn Weakley 27, Jenna Thomsen 12, Caylin Luthi 9, Kam White 5, Candice Ashlock 3 and Sadie Albert 1.

“We struggled through some illness and injuries (this season). The ladies never made any excuses, we finished our season pretty strong,” stated Head Coach Brett Dannels. “We played some of our best basketball here at the end of the season. We ran into Little River, who has been ranked number one all year.” He concluded, “I am proud of all these young ladies. They bought into our system and played hard every game. We will miss our two seniors, Candice Ashlock and Jalynn Weakley. They brought leadership and experience to this program. I congratulate them for everything they have accomplished. We return a core group of juniors and sophomores next season and will add some solid young players from our JV and Junior High programs.”

Madison defeated Goessel, 47-32 in the semi-finals, after receiving a bye in the opening round. Against Goessel, the Lady Bulldogs claimed an early 15-2 lead after the first and continued the momentum to lead 28-14 at halftime. The Bulldogs led 36-21 after three and went on to claim the victory, 47-32. Scoring for Madison were Jalynn Weakley 24, Jenna Thomsen 9, Sadie Albert 5 and Caylin Luthi and Candice Ashlock each with 4.

In boys action, the Bulldogs faced Burden-Central in semi-final action on Monday, March 3. The game started slow, with the teams combining for six points in the first quarter. Madison trailed 2-4. The low scoring affair continued into the second with the Bulldogs trailing 7-14 at halftime. The game picked up in the second half, however, the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome the deficit and fell 24-43. Scoring for Madison were Colton Isch and Octavian Dean each with 9 and Brayden Grimmett, Cade Hurlburt and Cory Yowell all with 2.
