Monday, October 9 proved to be a difficult day at the golf course in Girard as high school golfers merged on to the course for Regional action. The weather may have been perfect, but pin placements were not. With the placements being difficult, scores came in high before the turn. Multiple coaches voiced their concerns and a short break was taken between the front and back nine and hole placements were moved on five of the nine holes.
Despite the struggles, Lady Tornado Annaliese Casper placed fourth at the Regional tournament and qualified for her third state appearance. Casper finished the round with a 98 (53/45) and was the second individual (of six not associated with a qualifying team) to advance to 3-1A State this Monday and Tuesday at Hesston. Casper placed sixth at regionals her freshman year and fourth place at regionals her junior year. During her sophomore year, Casper missed advancing to the state contest by one placing.
Qualifying scores for individuals ranged from 89 to 114. Margaret Ulrich of Wichita Collegiate claimed first place honors with an 89. The top four teams advanced to state, including Colgan (413), Caney Valley (434), Fredonia (448) and Columbus (452). Eureka was represented by three Tornadoes and was not able to compete as a team.
Also participating for Eureka were Kate Tourelle 130 (75/55) and Keira Crisswell 142 (71/71). Tourelle finished 34th and Crisswell tied for 39th. A total of 54 golfers competed at the Girard Regional.
Casper represented Eureka on Monday of this week at the 3-1A State Tournament. To qualify for the second day of state, golfers must be among the top six teams and the next 18 individuals or 54 golfers plus ties. As of press-time, golfers were still competing at Day 1 of the State Tournament. (Courtesy photo)
