The West Elk wrestling team traveled to Mound City on Tuesday, Feb. 11, for the Three Rivers League Dual Tournament, where they claimed fourth place as a team.
West Elk was open in several weight divisions, which put them behind before the duals began.
Against Central Heights, the Patriots fell, 36-24. They lost by default in the 120, 126, 132, 138, 144 and 175 weight classes. Both teams were open in the 113, 150, 157 and 165 weight classes. Patriots Welch Murphy (106), Boedy Murphy (190) and Joshua Patteson (215) won by default. The lone match for the dual was a bout of the heavyweights, with West Elk’s Edward Metcalf (285) claiming the win by fall over Cooper Tush (Central Heights).
Three Patriots had matches against Burlingame, with all three claiming the win by fall. B. Murphy (190) won by fall over Derrick Whingtton (Burlingame); Patteson (215) won by fall over Kooper Bond (Burlingame); and Metcalf (285) won by fall over unknown (unattached). W. Murphy (106) won by default. The Patriots lost by default in the 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157 and 175 weight classes. Both teams were open in the 113, 120 and 165 weight classes. West Elk lost 24-42.
Patriot Metcalf again had the lone match against Uniontown. He claimed the 285 match by fall, pinning Dylan Deibert (Uniontown). West Elk’s W. Murphy (106), B. Murphy (190) and Patteson (215) won by default. The Patriots lost by default in the 120, 132 and 175 weight classes. Both teams were open in the 113, 126, 138, 144, 150, 157 and 165 weight classes. West Elk claimed the dual, 24-18.
With Jayhawk-Linn having nearly a full team, the Patriots lost by default in nine of the 14 weight brackets. West Elk lost by default in the 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157 ad 175 classes. Both teams were open in the 165 weight class. B. Murphy (190) and Patteson (215) both won by fall over their opponents. B. Murphy pinned Rayse Dean (Jayhawk-Linn) and Patteson won by fall over an unattached wrestler. Patriots W. Murphy (106) and Metcalf (285) lost by fall to their Jayhawk-Linn opponents. West Elk lost the dual 12-66.
