To Represent Eureka At 3-1A Girls State

Eureka will be represented by two Lady Tornadoes at the 3-1A State Wrestling tournament as junior Harlie Owings and sophomore Maela Neill claimed hardware at the Rossville Super Regional.

Owings (33-8) pinned her way to a regional championship, claiming first place honors in the 170 pound weight class. In the Feb. 11 rankings by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, Owings was ranked 4th in state. She will face Cimarron freshman Aubree Dean (12-20) in the opening round at Hays.

Neill (27-15) had a daunting 32-man bracket with 24 girls vying for a chance to compete at the state tournament. Neill went 5-1 at Rossville, claiming all five wins by fall to claim third at the Super Regional. She will face Belleville-Republic County sophomore Kaydence Shelly (26-12) in the opening round at state.

This will be the first state appearance for both Owings and Neill. The 3-1A Girls State Tournament will be held at Gross Memorial Coliseum, in Hays, Feb. 28-March 1.

A special state send off will be held next Thursday, Feb. 27. Additional details will be shared in next week’s edition.
