Cancellation Of Recycling Program
Dear Editor, I am disappointed to see the cancellation of the Greenwood County recycling program. I regularly deposit my recyclables at the trailer and notice it is always full. It is clear the service is being used by the community. The recycling program is exactly that: a service. It was not created to bring revenue to the County. I am aware that recycling companies are not paying for recycling as they did years ago. However, recycling is no less important. Furthermore, I am disappointed that this decision appears to have been made rashly, without an opportunity for input from the very residents that elected this Commission. The time for input is before a decision, not after, with a note that it can be rescinded later. Lastly, it is clear that while the cancellation may have initially been framed as saving the taxpayer’s money, it was later clarified that the employee would be moved to a different department. Therefore, little, if any, money will be saved, and us, the residents, will lose a valuable service. I hope the Commission will encourage public input and reconsider this decision based on that feedback, rather than the false notion that tax money will be saved.

Too Much Power In Our Court Officials
October 5 2023, Jan Satterfield and Gill Gillette.
They sentenced a 27 year old adult to house arrest. Normally this would be fine. They sentenced said person to house arrest at my house.
I wasn’t present in court. I wasn’t contacted, wasn’t asked if this was okay.
Last I knew they don’t pay my bills. I do know this person. Does not reside at my residence.
This is not right. I have rights too. When our county officials can disregard my rights, then we as citizens of Greenwood County have no rights.
I am not in the judicial system in any way. Just want to live my life and be free.
Do these people have no one to answer to? Rest of us do.
Are they allowed to set up there and impose their will on our private citizens. Seems if they would do their jobs. This wouldn’t happen.
We have but one God. They are not it. I called Gill Gillettes office. She refused my phone call. Roy D. Higbee
Editor’s note: After reviewing case files, Herald staff learned that the probation officer had shared with the court that the defendant was living with his mother and therefore the court ordered house arrest to be at that location. Several factors play into the case; however, a hearing to modify the location has been discussed; but not yet scheduled. The defendant in this case is to turn himself back into custody on November 3.
Let’s Recycle MORE Not Less
Dear Editor: Today I was warmly welcomed at the meeting of our County Commissioners to express my opinion regarding recycling in this county. When are we consumers going to realize how we are trashing our planet with non-degradable materials like all kinds of plastics, aluminum, tin cans and containers? It takes some habit changing to use the recycling service offered instead of just dumping all disposables into the landfill.
Instead of ending the recycling service I would like to urge many more citizens to use the service. It is so easy to take all kinds of paper products, tin cans, plastics number 1 and 2 and glass containers to the trailer bins and then to place cardboard and aluminum cans in separate containers.
How well I know the pressures of funding all the services in the county! This recycling service does cost, but it also gives back by reducing trash along the county roads and by reducing the volume of trash into the landfill. Let’s recycle MORE not less!!!
Sincerely, Patsy Garner
