Owings/Neill Claimed Hardware At Rossville Super Regional

Two Lady Tornado wrestlers ventured to Rossville on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15 for the Girls 3-1A East Regional, where both claimed hardware and will represent Eureka at Hays for the Girls 3-1A State Tournament Feb. 28-March 1.

Lady Tornado junior Harlie Owings was named Regional Champion and Eureka sophomore Maela Neill went 5-1 for the day to place third.

This will be the first state appearance for both Owings and Neill. The 3-1A Girls State Tournament will be held at Gross Memorial Coliseum, in Hays, Feb. 28-March 1.

Owings will face Cimarron freshman Aubree Dean (12-20) in the opening round at Hays.

Neill (27-15) will face Belleville-Republic County sophomore Kaydence Shelly (26-12) in the opening round at state.

A special state send off will be held next Thursday, Feb. 27. Additional details will be shared in next week’s edition.

Following are the individual match results for Owings and Neill: 125: Maela Neill (2715) placed 3rd. She won by fall over Piper Brobst (Eskridge-Mission Valley Hs) 6-18 (Fall 0:42); won by fall over Lillee Merryman (Caney Valley Hs) 5-18 (Fall 4:49); won by fall over Briley Cannon (Council Grove Hs) 32-14 (Fall 1:56); lost by fall to Emma Vice (Atchison- Maur Hill-Mount Academy) 39-2 (Fall 3:47); won by fall over Hailei Fortman (Mound City- Jayhawk Linn Hs) 26-15 (Fall 2:11); and won by fall over Kyley Sly (Herington Hs) 22-7 (Fall 2:55).

170: Harlie Owings (33-8) placed 1st. She received a bye, won by fall over KayLynn Nicholson (Osage City Hs) 15-10 (Fall 2:00); won by fall over Lexi Taylor (Cottonwood Falls-Chase County Hs) 29-16 (Fall 5:18); and won by fall over Brenah Cannon (Council Grove Hs) 12-4 (Fall 5:32).
