1943-2025
Kay Dunlap passed away peacefully on February 2nd, 2025. She was married to Bruce Dunlap (Eureka, KS) in June 1984, who preceded her in death. Kay is survived by her sister, Jeanne Thompson of Wichita; her niece, Megan Whiteley (Todd); her great-niece, Sydney Whiteley of Lenexa, KS; and her stepson, David Dunlap Hillman (Jamee) and three step-grandchildren of Kingman, KS.
Kay was a lifelong resident of Wichita except for when they spent extended time at the farm in Greenwood County, near Eureka. Kay graduated from Southeast High and furthered her education at the University of Kansas, eventually earning her master's degree in education from Wichita State University. Kay embarked on a 37-year teaching career in language arts, serving at Truesdale, Wilbur, and Hadley Middle Schools.
Kay had a multitude of interests throughout her life and remained actively involved in numerous groups. Kay was part of the “Ninety Nines,” an international organization for women pilots, she was part of the “Bluebirds,” a class group that took many trips together, “Operation School Bell,” and “Assistance League of Wichita.” She was an enthusiast of aerobic dancing and enjoyed her time at Panera’s after class. Kay had started a book club fifty years prior who still meet monthly. Kay loved creating photo albums and personal cards. She shared her art with others by teaching scrapbooking classes in Wichita.
If you asked Kay how she was doing her response was often “Fine as frog hair!” Often people would respond with “Fine as frog hair?!” and Kay would exclaim “Well, have you ever seen frog’s hair? It’s pretty fine!” It was a fine day as long as Kay had her vanilla Blue Bell ice cream and a sprinkle of butterfinger candy bar on top. Kay will be missed for her quick wit, intelligence, and her radiant charm.
During their marriage, Kay and Bruce dedicated themselves to their farm in Greenwood County. They enjoyed countless happy days with their cattle, dogs, and friends. One of Kay’s prized possessions was her fencing plyers, which she gifted to her son David.
In memory of Kay, donations can be made to the Assistance League of Wichita, as per her request. ALW 2431 East Douglas St, Wichita, KS 67211 A celebration of Kay's life will be held this spring.
