The Eureka Junior High basketball season concluded last week with a Tri-Valley League Tournament.
Eureka’s A-team boys capped off the season with a second place Tri-Valley League finish, defeating Bluestem 57-4 and Humboldt 39-31. The Tornadoes fell to Caney, 21-41.
Against the Lions of Bluestem, the A-team boys had a 26-0 lead after the first and were up 38-4 at halftime. Eureka held the Lions scoreless in the second half and won the game 57-4. Scoring for the Tornadoes were Tate Scott 21, Eli Mason 10, Cash Escareno 7, Dylan Conard 6, Wacey Ross 4, Maddox Hughes 3, and Liam Mead and Ja-Kolby Robbins each with 2.
Eureka then traveled to Erie on Thursday to take on the Cubs of Humboldt. The Tornadoes claimed an early 9-8 lead and increased their lead in the second, leading 22-16 at the half. Eureka maintained their six-point lead in the third, leading 30-24 going into the final stanza. The Tornadoes went on to win the game 39-31. Scoring for Eureka were Scott 19, Mason 14 and Ross and Robbins each with 2.
In the championship game, the Tornadoes traveled to Caney to take on the Bullpups. Eureka trailed 2-9 after the first; but fell behind in a tough second quarter, trailing 7-26 at halftime. The Tornadoes had their best quarter in the third, scoring 10 and holding the Bullpups to just 6. With one quarter remaining, the Tornadoes trailed 17-33. The game concluded with a 21-41 loss and a second place finish in the Tri-Valley League.
Eureka’s B-team boys were able to play two quarters against Bluestem in the opening round. The Tornadoes won the game 16-1. Scoring for Eureka were Cord Adkins 5, Cooper Wunderlich, Brandon Cornett, Henry Lindamood, Donovan Owings and Asher Euler all with 2 and Gavin Gonzales 1.
The B-team also faced the Cubs of Humboldt in Erie on Thursday. Eureka’s Adkins opened the scoring with a 3-pointer. To round out the quarter, Eureka’s Felix Neill added 6 and Owings and Euler each added 2 to give the Tornadoes a 13-5 victory after the first. The Tornadoes fell apart in the second; but maintained a 13-9 lead going into halftime. Eureka returned in the third more aggressive. This increased their lead to 23-14, but also put them in foul trouble. The Tornadoes looked to be rushing in the fourth and forced plays which ultimately resulted in turnovers. Eureka also continued to foul which sent the Cubs to the line who captivated and turned Eureka’s last game into a loss. The Tornadoes fell 25-27. Scoring for Eureka were Neill 10, Adkins 5 and Owings and Gonzales each with 4.
Lady Tornadoes
The Lady Tornadoes also opened the tournament with Bluestem. Eureka’s A-team were all tied at 13 at halftime, but fell behind in the third, 17-20. The Lady Tornadoes were only able to score one basket in the fourth quarter and fell to Leon, 19-31. Scoring for Eureka were Annabell Bogle 7, Amorette Guillaume and Bella Damron each with 4, McKenna McDonald 3 and Abbi Foth 1.
Eureka’s B-team Ladies fell to Bluestem 16-40. Additional details were unavailable at the time of publication.
On Thursday, the Lady Tornadoes traveled to Erie, where they capped of their season with victories over the Galesburg Timberwolves.
Eureka’s A-team Ladies led 10-2 at halftime and continued to pull away in the third, leading 25-8 with one quarter remaining in regulation. The Lady Tornadoes went on to win the game 32-15. Scoring for Eureka were Bogle 9, Damron 8, McDonald 7, Guillaume 4 and Foth and Andee Weatherby each with 2.
The B-team Ladies claimed a 10-point lead in the first and continued the momentum in the second quarter, leading 16-6 at halftime. With one quarter remaining, Eureka lead 19-12 and won the game 24-19. Scoring for Eureka were Weatherby 13, Alivia Hare 4, Kinsley Cox, Reagan Ashlock and Brielle Thompson all with 2 and Damron 1.
