With hopes of securing funds to support other community projects, the Eureka Knights of Columbus Chapter No. 7291, held their annual “Tootsie Roll” sales promotion.
On Thursday, Jan. 16, local Knights presented a check, in the amount of $616.80, to Scott Hoyt, Superintendent of USD 389 Eureka, for the Special Education Program.
A donation of $92 was made to Hamilton USD 390 for their Special Education Program.
Twenty percent of the proceeds from the sales were retained by the Kansas State Council, which a portion of the funds is used to sponsor the Special Olympic Basketball Tournament. Last year, well over 1,200 Kansas athletes competed in the tournament. The remainder of the funds will be used to support the Bishops special charities for those with intellectual disabilities. The Kansas State Council also provides much needed support to organizations for the intellectually disabled.

In accepting the check, Superintendent Hoyt expressed appreciation to every Knight and all of the contributors who made the funds available to support Special Education and events for the mentally challenged individuals.
The funds will be used to help students learn to live independently and to buy clothes, if needed, for their work place. The money is also used for training materials for on-the-job work and to have community trips to learn social skills and add to the student’s leisure activities.
The Knights of Columbus also host the annual Free Throw Championships annually. This year, the event will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 29. See related ad for more details.
